This concert features music by maverick American composer Henry Brant. One of his last compositions, Ice Fields for Organ and Orchestra, won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize in Music. On the program are early pieces by Brant, including Rhapsody for Viola and Orchestra. The rhapsody will be receiving its second performance, having only been performed in 1941. The orchestra parts were rediscovered in the composer's estate. Beethoven's energetic and playful Symphony #4 concludes the concert.

Our 75th anniversary celebration concludes with Mahler's titanic First Symphony, which he described as “a world unto itself.” A journey he began in childhood led to the writing of this monumental work. Through Mahler’s words and music we will travel on a journey which culminates in a triumphant performance of the complete work.

This presentation is a lecture/demonstration of pedagogy for bridging the gap between practice and performance. Jim Stinnett has created tools and a methodology that have proven successful with many students. “Etudes are the missing link which fills the gap in many students’ studies,” Stinnett says. This presentation will include performances of selected etudes by four different bassists.

‘A Force of Nature” says it all - transformation, a sense of space, big vistas, great journeys, and a landscape filled with energy and possibilities. From a cool mountain spring, the mighty river Moldau grows. From the glints of sunshine on forest leaves, a concerto featuring the glitter of Ann Hobson Pilot’s harp, bursts forth. From the summit of a distant peak, Alan Hovhaness’ symphony Mysterious Mountain takes shape. And Rome’s silent sentinels, its mighty Pines bear witness to the eternal city’s rush of history and humanity.
